NORTH GOA

Fort Aguada In Goa

A seventeenth-century shining beacon that once directed Portuguese sailors who dreamt of trading spices from the Konkan Coast is now thronged by vacationers wanting to make their Dil-Chahta-Hai dreams come true.

Built by the Portuguese, the formidable Fort Aguada sits south of the Sinquerim Beach in Goa near the mouth of the Mandovi River. Facing the inviting waters of Arabian Sea, a lighthouse inside the fort attracts visitors throughout the year. Today its remnants stand as a testimony to the glory days of Portuguese Empire. Its name is derived from the Portuguese word ‘Agua’ which stands for ‘water’ as the fresh spring near the hill provided constant supply to ship crews. An engineering marvel of its time, this prized bastion kept off Dutch and Maratha invaders for many decades before it was finally captured by the British.

Its lighthouse used to house the famous bell from the Church of St Augustine which now tolls in the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Panaji. Besides the five-star Fort Aguada Beach Resort, the complex also has a fresh water storage tank, one of the largest in Asia built in that era. Reis Magos Fort Goa

About Reis Magos Fort In Goa

Listed under the Goa Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, the Reis Magos Fort in Goa is the oldest fort in the state. That’s right, it is even older than Fort Aguada. The fort is located on the banks of Mandovi River, in the Reis Magos village of Bardez. Reis Magos can roughly be translated from Portuguese to mean the Three Wise Men, from the Bible. Although the Reis Magos fort had fallen to ruins in the yesteryears, it has now been restored for serving as a Cultural and Heritage Centre and has become a must-visit for those going off the beaten track.

As far as the Reis Magos fort history is concerned, the fort was constructed in the year 1493, and served as an armed outpost for King Adil Shah. Back then, it was only a small structure, but when the Portuguese took over in 1541, they constructed the entire fort and a small church as well, later referred to as the Reis Magos church. The Reis Magos fort architecture is reminiscent of the Portuguese style of construction, seeing that a majority of the construction was carried out after the Portuguese arrived in Goa.

Right before the 1900s, it was used as a jail, and was later abandoned a couple of years later. With its restoration, an immediate requirement, the Helen Hamlyn Trust paid for the restoration, in collaboration with the Government of Goa and INTACH. After all of the restoration was completed, the fort was opened to the general public in mid-2012. Hope this quenches your thirst for Reis Magos fort information, something that is elusive and hard to find.
